A review of the third album; Translations From Dirty Linen Magazine - June/July, 2002
As the Chieftains have relentlessly shown, Irish music is a kind of universal solvent, breaking down other genres and blending them with surprising success. The Donegal X-Press is the latest example of a band infusing a well-developed musical sound with Irish traditional music and creating something superior. The Donegal X-Press is a bar band from Maryland that rests on the solid songwriting of Brad Dunnells and the vocals of Dunnells, Lyle Hein, and Jason Tinney, who are joined by Laura Hein (keyboard, backing vocals) and Skye Sadowski (fiddle, backing vocals). Their musical influences range from hip-hop to bluegrass to Cajun to jangly guitar rock. Most of all, Translations has all the boundless fun and energy of the early work by the Pogues, the Whiskey Priests, or the Waterboys. |
